SD/P5 Combi: a 6-axis parallel-link robot on the Cermex stand

19.01.2011

At the forthcoming Emballage exhibition in Paris, Cermex is presenting the first end of line packaging machine to integrate Fanuc's new 6-axis parallel-link (delta) robot.

The combined SD/P5 case packing and palletizing unit, recognized for its qualities, is configured in a totally new stand-up pouch application, with truly innovative performance in terms of both movement and payload capacities. High-level technical characteristics and optimized cycle time further enhance the 6-axis parallel-link robot. With this very successful robot integration that is perfectly suited to the requirements of many industrial sectors, Cermex strikingly illustrates its ability to supply cutting-edge automated packaging solutions, developed within Cermex or externally sourced depending on the opportunities.

6, as in 6 axes and 6 kg

With 2 additional axes, the new robot inches closer to the movement capacity of a human hand. In particular, it is capable of setting products upright or laying them down depending on how they are fed into the machine and how they are to be arranged in the case. This breakthrough is all the more remarkable in that it is associated with an increase in power. The integration of the 6-axis parallel-link robot accommodates payloads of up to 6kg. This capacity significantly widens the spectrum of possible applications for this version of the SD/P5 combined unit. The stand-up pouch application on show proves as much.

6-axis parallel-link robot: concentrated performance

High-level technical characteristics further enhance the 6-axis parallel-link robot, such as the possibility of installing a Fanuc vision system instead of traditional mechanical infeed systems. The cylindrical work envelope (diameter 1350mm, height 500mm) is also remarkable. Its unique design comprised of an ultra-light 6-axis parallel-link structure can accommodate high speeds with cycle times of just 0.3 seconds. Its lightweight and compact design gives rise to robot units with a reduced layout. The robot parameters are entered on the machine HMI to ensure ergonomic operating conditions. With such an array of qualities, this version of the SD/P5 Combi is a must-see at the exhibition.

Cermex: end of line expertise

A worldwide innovation, the 6-axis parallel-link robot developed by Fanuc offers applications in various fields of activity. If the integration into a Cermex machine is an exclusive in the packaging field, it is not by chance. Firstly, the partnership between the two companies goes back a long way and is illustrated by many successful applications. Secondy, the Cermex design team was the most designated actor to lead this new industrial and commercial challenge resulting from its capacity to anticipate market requirements and transpose them into innovative packaging solutions.

The SD/P5 combined case packing and palletizing unit: a machine with proven qualities

As compact as it is modular

The SD/P5 Combi is a new-generation case packing and palletizing unit combining an SD58 top-loading module with a P5 palletizing module. Doing away with inter-machine conveyors not only reduces the machine footprint but also generates a significant financial saving, while optimizing operator ergonomics.
One of the advantages of this completely modular design is that it can be applied to both top loading (SD range, as for the machine on show) and side loading (new compact SD side loading range).

Dual performance

Even though the SD/P5 Combi solution was designed to meet the requirements of an integrated and compact end of line, nothing is sacrificed in terms of performance.

In regard to case loading, the combined unit retains all the advantages of the "Ready to Pack" range, namely positive handling of the packaging throughout each phase. Integrating a whole range of loading arms increases its versatility. Case format changeovers are completely automatic thanks to motorized adjustment points.

In regard to palletization, the module is part of the new generation of ultra-compact 4-axis palletizers combining performance, production control and operator safety. A gantry principle broadens the layout possibilities. A telescopic arm unfurls in 4 sliding parts to limit the machine height. The gripping/transfer tooling includes the rotation function necessary to build all the required pallet patterns.

In addition, the P5 benefits from the original SecurBox® system. This mobile cubicle partition, which is slid between the two palletizing stations by the telescopic arm, enables the operator to safely handle full and empty pallets without stopping the machine cycle.
