AmorePacific relies on DuPont™ Surlyn® packaging resin to give its new premium skincare lines a luxury look and feel

05.02.2008

The redesigned packaging for a range of premium skincare products from leading Asian brand AmorePacific rely on the aesthetical and functional performance of DuPont™ Surlyn® packaging resin. Used in a total of seven new products from the company’s Hera skincare and Laneige sun care lines, Surlyn® was selected by AmorePacific due to its high transparency and resistance to both scratches and chemicals.

According to AmorePacific, the new products have been well-received by its customers, who have commented on the packaging’s luxurious appearance and warm, pleasant tactile properties.

The first range to benefit from the properties of Surlyn® is AmorePacific’s Hera ‘Cream-to-Powder’, ‘Skin Fix Primer’ and ‘Soothing water Foundation’ skincare products, all available in squeezable tottles – a relatively new convenient packaging structure that combines characteristics of a squeeze tube and self-standing bottle. The tottle is produced using multilayer extrusion blow moulding, with an outer layer of tough and transparent Surlyn® and an inner layer made from low density polyethylene (LDPE).

“Feedback from customers confirms the aesthetic and sensorial appeal of the tottles. Most commented that the container was easy to carry in their bags or even in a pouch as it is not too big.” says Hak-Chan Kim, senior manager of the packaging research team at AmorePacific.

Also marketed under the Hera brand are two further AmorePacific skincare products, a ‘Cream Foundation’ and a ‘Liquid Foundation’, both use Surlyn® as a core component of their so-called “hybrid packaging” concept: For the cream jar, a round inner-jar made of SAN is enclosed in a black, squared-off casing, moulded in transparent, scratch- and chemical- resistant Surlyn®. The tall and slim liquid  foundation bottle follows a similar principle, whereby a PETG inner-bottle is protected by a black, transparent outer-casing made of Surlyn®. “Our Hera brand is targeted at the prestige market and our customers have liked the superior touch and softness of our latest ranges,” comments Hak-Chan Kim. “Our cream and liquid foundation products have been particularly well received. Customers feel the black, glass-like design of the packaging creates a very luxurious image, well-matched to the Hera brand, yet both the jar and the bottle are considerably lighter than glass and less prone to scratching or hipping.”

Completing the range of new products from AmorePacific using Surlyn® are the company’s Laneige sun care products for men and women. Produced using the same multi-layered extrusion blow moulding process employed for the Hera tottles, the sun cream bottles also have a Surlyn® outer layer over an LDPE inner layer. “As with the tottles, Surlyn® was chosen for its high gloss and transparency, attractive touch and resistance to the sun-block formulae,” explains Hak-Chan Kim. “Customers consider the package design to be very luxurious and modern. In fact some women even expressed a preference for the male product due to its design.”
