IV Moscow International Conference "Polyethylene 2007"

Polyethylene was and is going to be the most important polymer, taking the first place for production output and demand among all large commodity plastics. The world capacity of polyethylene production increased up to 70 million tons per year, the polyethylene output in 2005 amounted to 65 million per year. At the same time the world demand increase by 5% per year, and Asian region is going to become the world center of polyethylene market growth. At the world scene Russian and CIS producers do not play the important role now. However, the rapid increase of polyethylene production, domestic hydrocarbon raw material supply and plans of first-rate vertically-integrated companies for polyolefin branch development can result in substantial increase of CIS countries role at the world arena within 5-10 years.

Within the past few years the dynamic growth of polyethylene production volumes was registered in Russia. This is the result of the increase of demand for this production from polyethylene processing enterprises, increasing polymer and metallic-polymer tubes production, production of films, packaging materials, etc.

Nevertheless, in spite of production growth, the polyethylene demand exceeds the supply at the Russian market. The current domestic output of polyethylene is not enough, that can be confirmed by export decrease and import increase for this product. In 2005 Russian producers of polyethylene decreased export by more than 40 per cent in comparison with the same values of 2003, down to 160,8 thousand tons. In 2005 polyethylene import reached 196,6 thousand tons that is 1,9 times more than 2002. The main import thread is formed by the polyethylene grades, not produced in Russia which are used for the production of high-tech goods.

The absence of the number of domestically produced polyethylene grades is not the only problem of Russian polyethylene market. In particular, the difficult situation concerning the quantity of the great number of polyethylene grades was observed at the Russian market from the middle of summer till the end of 2006. This fact resulted in substantial growth of initial prices and had the negative influence on the processing companies' margin.

At existing state the open communication of market participants, the information interchange and coordination of their joint efforts is necessary for further dynamic and effective development of the branch. That was the purpose of the first conference "Polyethylene 2004" organized by CREON in 2004. Within this period (since 2004) the event gained the status of must-be event where all major players of the market discussed the current state of the branch, the year backlog of problems and their decisions, as well as the development prospects. Besides well-known major Russian and foreign companies, regularly participating in the conferences organized by CREON, the new organizations join the conference every year. The conferences organized by CREON are well known not only for the information required to the participants but also as the excellent opportunity to maintain the existing contacts and strike up new ones.
